Brisbane's new bus network

Learn how we’re reshaping our bus network to improve travel times and cater for future growth.

About Brisbane's new bus network

Our city is growing and so is the demand for fast and efficient public transport.

Each year, our buses move nearly 80 million customers to and from their destinations. Most journeys focus on getting from the suburbs to the Central Business District (CBD).

As the city’s population grows, this will add pressure to busy and congested transport corridors, slowing the entire network.

To help plan for the future, we invited community feedback on Brisbane’s public transport network. With your feedback in mind, we developed a plan to reshape the bus network.

Benefits of Brisbane’s new bus network:

  • improved on-time services during peak periods
  • more than 85% of trips will be faster or similar during peak periods
  • new routes and extending all-day services
  • improved service frequency in our suburbs.

Explore the new network

Brisbane's New Bus Network guide provides insight on how the network has been finalised following consideration of community feedback and further network planning.

This includes a summary of feedback and Council's response, along with individual maps for updated routes.

Download the guide and read more about the changes.

What’s next?

Council will continue to work closely with the Queensland Government on implementation activities for the new bus network and metro services. This includes:

  • making your suburban network ready for implementation

  • completing the construction of new and improved infrastructure

  • continuing to test and commission new metros and introduce them to the network

  • improving our onboard metro systems based on customer feedback and further testing

  • working with Translink to get our customers ready to travel on the new network.

Ongoing improvements across the network

We’re improving our bus network all the time. Learn about other programs helping to make Brisbane a safe, accessible and well-connected city for everyone.

Bus stop shade tree planting

Under the Shade Trees at Bus Stops program, Council is planting trees at bus stops citywide, providing much-needed natural shade for commuters.

We’ve developed guidelines for identifying bus stops that are suitable for tree planting. Key factors include:

  • bus stop design and accessibility requirements
  • street verge width
  • appropriate planting clearances (e.g. maintaining sightlines)
  • planting constraints (e.g. overhead and underground services)
  • tree species (a variety of preferred species are available)
  • existing and future shade
  • location, patronage and proximity to other community services
  • bus stop user vulnerability to sun and heat exposure
  • solar orientation
  • existing bus stop infrastructure.

In the 2021-22 financial year, we planted more than 800 trees at over 230 bus stops.

Nearly 300 bus stops at various locations across Brisbane received new street trees in 2022-23.

Bus stop upgrades program

Council is upgrading bus stops across Brisbane to ensure the public transport network is:

  • safe
  • accessible to people of all abilities
  • meeting current legislative standards.

Over the past 9 years, Council has made a significant investment in upgrading our bus stop network. Approximately 81% of our network has been upgraded as of June 2022.

Works are prioritised based on location, access to community and disability services, patronage and Council priorities.

Improvements include:

  • upgrades to boarding points
  • access paths
  • waiting areas
  • signs
  • tactile ground surface indicators
  • bus stop seats and shelters.

Construction takes place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday.

Some out-of-hour work may be required.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the local community.
